yesterday i learned a lesson. and the name of the lesson was called, "when you do something stupid, remember the thing that you did that was stupid, and don't do the thing ever again."
i learn this lesson all the time, i suppose. maybe that makes it more of a class than a lesson. or a college course. i am indeed majoring in "when you do something stupid, remember the thing that you did that was stupid, and don't do the thing ever again 101."
but alas, just the same as when you take a high school math class, write the final exam, and the next week can't remember how to do quadratic equations
[which is, by the way, an equation containing a single variable of degree 2, and whose general form is ax squared plus bx plus c equals zero, where x is the variable and a, b, and c are constants (a is not equal to zero)],
i learn my lesson [i use the term "learn" loosely], and the next day, i again do the thing that was stupid that i did and forgot not to do again.
yesterday, i met barclay at the front door when he got home from work. he looked tired. he'd been out since 7 am clearing the heavy dump of snow from peoples' driveways. it was now late afternoon, he hadn't eaten lunch, and he was overly sore, damp, and cold SO, being the thoughtful and ever considerate wife that i am, i gave him a long hug and a very apologetic look before blurting out, "i cleaned it up! the basement, i mean. i flooded the basement. again. i'm sorry. but i cleaned it up. it's pretty much dry now...and i'm sorry...and i cleaned the bathroom and did the dishes too. and the laundry. i'm sorry, this won't happen again."
a sub-lesson of this larger lesson is this: "if you do something stupid once, you can say 'sorry, this won't happen again.' if you do the same stupid thing again, you can no longer say, 'sorry, this won't happen again,' because no one will take you seriously.
but, even though i don't think he took that last bit seriously, and is probably [rightly] convinced in his own mind that this will, in fact, happen again, he did the whole awesome husband thing and just hugged me and hugged me and even laughed and said "it's ok. it's fine. that sucks for you that that happened, but i'm not upset. i missed you so much today."
i guess the moral of the story is that you should always only marry awesome people. or one, i mean. one awesome person. whatever. you know.
oh yeah, and the moral of the story is also that when you do something stupid, remember the thing that you did that was stupid, and don't do the thing ever again.

I like this post. Being a wife is full of learning and re-learning lessons. And I think you and Barclay make a great pair.
